ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This project includes rhetorical analysis essays and abstracts from 12th grade students at The Dayton Regional STEM School in Kettering, Ohio who are enrolled in a College-Credit English course through Sinclair Community College. Students engaged with races in the 2018 midterm elections in Ohio by selecting a candidate or issue of their choice and analyzing the effectiveness of a text produced by or for that candidate or issue based on its rhetorical appeals. In September 2018, The New York Times featured this project and our 11th grade students first-time voter's guide as recommended ways to teach the midterm elections in schools.

ABOUT DRSS

DRSS Logo.jpg

The Dayton Regional STEM School in Kettering, Ohio is a public, regional STEM school for students in grades 6-12. Students at this school engage in rigorous project-based learning where they tackle real-world problems while addressing academic content standards. Although many of the students at the school pursue STEM fields and careers after graduation, the school's strong Humanities curriculum aims to show them how to be productive citizens and "human beings" regardless of their area of interest. In addition to offering a supportive and hands-on learning environment, the school also serves as a Training Center where educators in Ohio and from around the country can learn about integrating project-based learning into their own classrooms and schools.
